Cliparr runs entirely in your browser. This means its speed, video playback, and export capabilities depend on the features your browser allows.
For the best experience, use a modern, stable browser and always access Cliparr over HTTPS. (Local localhost access also works for testing).
| Browser | Experience | Key Note |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome / Edge | 🟢 Best | Most mature support for in-browser video processing. |
| Firefox | 🟡 Good | Reliable and stable for most editing and export tasks. |
| Safari (macOS/iOS) | đźź Mixed | Fully supported, but sensitive to high-bitrate video formats. |
Safari & iOS Considerations
Video Processing (WebCodecs)
Cliparr uses a technology called WebCodecs to process your clips directly in the browser.
- Chromium/Firefox: Support is very stable.
- Safari: While modern Safari supports these features, it can be more sensitive to specific video formats. If an export fails in Safari, try Chrome or Edge on the same machine.
Installing as an App (PWA)
- Android: Chrome and Edge can install Cliparr with a single tap using a native prompt.
- iOS/iPadOS: Apple requires you to use the Share button and then select Add to Home Screen. Cliparr will show you a small guide on how to do this when it detects you are on an iPhone or iPad.
- Desktop Safari: You can install Cliparr as a “Web App” by going to
File > Add to Dock.
Technical Feature Map
Cliparr uses feature detection to decide what to show you. If a feature isn’t supported by your browser, Cliparr will either provide a fallback or hide the option to prevent errors.
| Feature | How Cliparr uses it | Safari Status |
|---|---|---|
| Video Processing | Powering the editor and exports via WebCodecs. | Supported in 16.4+, but occasionally buggy with high-bitrate source files. |
| App Install | Making Cliparr feel like a native app on your phone. | Requires manual “Add to Home Screen” on iOS. |
| Service Workers | Making the app load instantly by caching files. | Fully supported since Safari 11.1. |
| WebM Video | Serving smaller, faster video previews on the homepage. | Supported in Safari 14.1+ on macOS, and iOS 17.4+. |
Troubleshooting
If the editor won’t load or exports keep failing:
- Update your browser: Ensure you are on the latest stable version.
- Check your connection: Browser media features often require a “Secure Context” (HTTPS).
- Try Chrome/Edge: If you are having trouble in Safari or Firefox, testing in a Chromium-based browser is the best way to determine if the issue is browser-specific.
